Past District Governor, Vern Nielsen, presents Rotarian, Chantelle Meriam, with a certiciate of recognition for successfully completing District 5060's Rotary Leadership Institute program in the fall of 2015.

We're happy to announce that another Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) course will be taking place this spring (March 24, April 7, April 21).  For those that don't know, RLI is a 3 day program designed to give participants more information about Rotary, how to create and carry out more effective community programs, and to build friendships across the clubs in our district. Though the curriculum is designed with the idea that participants will take days 1, 2 &3 in order, that's not 100% necessary, so if you're not able to make all 3 courses this spring, you can attend another RLI session in the future to graduate.  RLI is often paid for by your club, so ask if you're not sure.

When: March 24, April 7, April 21
Where: The Coast Capri Hotel (1171 Harvey Ave, Kelowna)
Why: To build friendships and acquire knowledge about Rotary.
Who: All Rotarians, no matter how long they've been in Rotary.
How much: To help cover costs, RLI costs $85 per person per day.  The district is currently covering half the fees, so 1 day is $42.50, 2 days are $85.00, and 3 days are $127.50. Payments can be made either by credit card or cheque**

**SUMMERLAND ROTARY CLUB MEMBERS**
Please note the cost of attending these sessions will be 100% covered by our Club. Please speak to Treasurer, Doug Carnegie, about payment for these courses.

Thank you to those Rotarians who have already registered their spot at the upcoming RLI courses. Currently, from our Club, we have Megan McLeod who has registered her participation to attend all three courses. Haven't signed up yet but would like to? Don't worry - there are still spots available!

The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) program is a series of fast-paced, interactive, one-day courses offered to refine a Rotarian's leadership skills and increase their base of knowledge in Rotary. Courses are fun, topical, interactive and geared to busy business, professional and community leaders who want to be more effective leaders in their vocation and Rotary club, and more knowledgeable Rotarians.

Participants return to their clubs with enthusiasm, new contacts, fresh ideas, an increased understanding of their potential as Rotarians, and valuable skills impacting their potential leadership in the club. The full program has three parts. It is best to take the parts in sequence however that is not always possible. Please discuss with the Registrar or any member of the Faculty.

The Rotary Leadership Institute was introduced into District 5060 in 2008. It is a grassroots training program that has been growing and expanding since 1992. Its purpose is to help future club leaders (not necessarily club presidents) to prepare for their club and community leadership role through a quality training and educational experience. RLI has spread to over 350 districts in the Rotary world and has been translated into ten languages.

Hear what other Rotarians have been saying about the program:

"Personally I found the Rotary Leadership courses to be very valuable (my courses were completed in 2008 and 2009). Having completed many management courses during my career in information technology, including the American Management Association’s flagship (at the time) Management Course for Presidents, I expected the leadership institute courses to be a bit of a refresher – but I gained a great deal more from them than I expected. My volunteer “career” with Rotary commenced with a couple of years responsibility for local programs followed by a number of years as club secretary. I don’t think I could have executed those responsibilities without the leadership courses nor could I have been  as effective as I hope I was.

For anyone joining Rotary I believe the leadership courses are of immense value – and more so if the attendee is just starting out in leadership. Rotary is quite a complex and wide-reaching organization and, for the local club and its members to gain the maximum benefit from the organization, its leaders need to know the
extent of it (Rotary) and how it works. Anyone taking the leadership courses though will benefit from them in many other ways: through listening to motivated and motivational speakers; through study of ethical behaviours; by practicing leadership; by learning about effective public relations; by learning how to gain support and build an organization; and learning how the philanthropic Rotary Foundation works.

My course material opens with the statement that: “Rotary cannot rise above the quality of its club leadership”. Truer words would be hard to find."

"The RLI training was nothing short of excellent.  It was a great way to foster great relationships with so many members of other Clubs and significantly increase my knowledge and appreciation of Rotary.  I learned so much more about Rotary and the fundamentals of Rotary than I did attending PETS.  It was an experience that I would highly recommend for all Rotarian, both new and senior.  Well worth the time commitment."
