Summerland Rotary Club donates $8,600.00 for sun shades on garden pergolas at the Summerland Extended Care Unit.

The Dr. Andrew Pavilion Extended Care Unit delivers client-centered care to 50 senior residents of Summerland. It is occupied by many staff, volunteers, family and friends. On any given day the facility will have approximately 150 people on site.

Until late last year the residents had no safe, sheltered outdoor spaces. They desperately needed to create a beautiful outdoor area where they could feel connected to the natural world and where contemplation and privacy was part of their living experience.

With the involvement of many individuals and organizations a TherapeuticGarden was built completely by donated funds. Today residents have room to roam through a variety of garden areas with wheelchairs, walkers and even full sized beds for residents when they are unable to be mobile.

It is a popular area for everyone and a special place for events and social gatherings. The only piece missing from the TherapeuticGarden was a shade structure to protect the residents from the suns harmful UV rays. During the hottest part of the day, no one is able to sit outside.

The project was to build two Pergolas at each end of the garden to allow residents to sit in the warm weather completely protected from the sun. Pergolas canvas covers give people the opportunity to have a little or a lot of shade depending on the need.

Summerland Rotary Club's portion of the project was to donate the funding necessary for shades on both pergolas.
